Directions to Birchdale Lake (Nova Nada)

Go to Kemptville Nova Scotia, near Carleton (it’s on the NS map)

Go to Kemptville general store (it will be on your right if you have come from Carleton way) and turn left at the church across the road. If you are coming from Halifax you will take the cut off at Shelburne – exit 26 at the Tim Hortons (right turn off the highway 103 to highway 203) that brings you into Kemptville with the store on the left and church on the right. You will make a “hairpin” right turn at the church, across the road from the Kemptville general store.

At the church set your “tripodometer” and start counting kilometers. The pavement will eventually end at 5.4 km, and the road from here on in will gradually deteriorate.

That's how you know your going the right way. At 7.1 km you will come to a fork in the road. Take the right fork. (we will try to have a marker, but sometimes the markers get taken down) You will go over a green bridge between the two forks.

Ignore the less obvious logging roads that run off the road you are on. At 11.3 km you will come to the second fork, take this right (its more of a right turn than a fork).

Keep following this road as it deteriorates, (as the road deteriorates, the forest becomes more beautiful. Funny how that works.) at 16.2 km you'll come to a brown wooden gate that will likely be open. either way, drive right in and turn left and you'll see other cars and a large building. Get out of the car there, and wander around until you run into someone.

From Kemptville General Store to Nova Nada it will take about ½ an hour. The road is very rocky and chunky in some places so you will have to go very slow. There is NO cell phone service from Carleton on. Do not rely on a cell phone if you get lost. Make sure you have lots of gas.

*you will see lots of clear cutting of forest on the way compliments of Irvin Oil. Try to detach from that, remember, it will recover… eventually… and the clear cutting ends well before Birchdale Lake, where, thankfully the destruction of man has not crept in….
