In the last 10 years that I have been seriously studying Yoga there have been many questions asked of me. Thankfully I have wonderful teachers and there are excellent reference books and material available for researching the answers to the questions. The questions that seem to arise most often, and with most trepidation and emotion are the ones regarding "spirituality". Ah yes, the "s" word. And how does it relate to Yoga?
The best source for answering questions on Yoga and spirituality would be the Yoga Sutras, an ancient text compiled by the great sage Patanjali. These are the philosophies and teachings that my studies (and hopefully, other current Yoga teachers studies) are based on. One could spend years, maybe even a lifetime dissecting and understanding the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. One may even decide to study the Vedas. The Vedas are believed to be the oldest source of knowledge in India compiled by ancient philosophers in an effort to find the way to reduce suffering in humans. The Vedas are very sacred. The school of Yoga is a part of these Vedas, or ancient, sacred teachings. No one knows exactly when they were written, or by whom, but there is evidence that shows they are more than 5,000 years old.
